How
do I convert an unused 220 volt outlet to 110 volts?
That's actually a fairly simple process. First, make sure that there are no other devices on the same circuit as
the outlet you want to convert. If there are, then you can't convert the receptacle. Next, turn off the 2-pole circuit
breaker associated with this outlet, disconnect the wires, and remove it from the panel. At the outlet location, remove the 220 receptacle and install a 110
volt receptacle, following the wiring instructions that came with it.

At the circuit breaker panel, connect the white (neutral) wire to
the bus bar in the panel (along with all the other white wires). Connect the black wire to a single pole circuit breaker.
Use a 15 amp breaker for 14 gauge copper wire or a 20 amp breaker for 12 gauge wire. If in doubt as to what wire size you
have, use a 15 amp breaker.
I bought a 240 volt 22 amp air compressor from Lowes. It didn’t come with a cord. Can I connect it to
my dryer outlet using a three prong dryer cord?
No, dryer cords are reserved only
for dryers. You’ll need to install a 30 amp power receptacle. You can then purchase a mating plug and install it on
a short piece of SJ rated cord.
